Assistant Principal Brings Strong Tech Background

With nearly 3 decades of experience in education, Galileo’s new assistant principal, Dr. Bloemsma, brings a passion for both technology and student success to the school community. From teaching and working with educational technology to leading the school as an administrator, he hopes to make a positive impact during his first year at Galileo.

Dr. Bloemsma’s journey in education began in the 1990s when he worked as a teacher’s assistant. After majoring in physiology at San Diego State University, he became a substitute teacher in San Francisco and later worked in Southern California before returning to the Bay Area in 2013. Along the way, he continued his education, earning a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from UC Irvine and a doctorate in Instructional Technology from San Francisco State University.

Throughout his 27-year career, technology has remained one of his biggest interests. While working at the ABC Unified School District in Orange County, he taught television broadcasting and digital media arts. He later joined the district technology department, where he helped manage Chromebooks and trained teachers on how to use technology effectively in their classrooms.

“My interest in technology came to be when I saw how it engaged students and how it got kids interested in learning. I consider myself a geek when it comes to technology,” said Dr. Bloemsma.

Although he is new to Galileo, Dr. Bloemsma said he has been pleasantly surprised by the school community. He praised the teachers and has been impressed by the wide range of student involvement in clubs, athletics, and ASB. What has stood out most, however, is the way students have welcomed him. From simple greetings in the hallways to active participation in school events, he said students have made his transition to Galileo both smooth and memorable.

Looking ahead, one of Dr. Bloemsma’s main goals is to strengthen connections between the school, students, and their families. After noticing the low attendance at Back to School Night, he hopes to find new ways to encourage parent involvement and help families build a stronger relationship with teachers and staff. “[I want students to know] that I care about them, and that there are adults here at school that support them,” said Dr. Bloemsma.

Outside of school, Dr. Bloemsma enjoys traveling, cooking, and baking. He is also the proud owner of a golden retriever named Cooper, who he says always brings him happiness. While these hobbies keep him busy, his commitment to education remains at the center of his work. Dr. Bloemsma says, “I have fun at my job. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, why even do it?”
