With the new addition of homeroom to this year’s schedule, there are varying opinions; ranging from the class being completely useless, to it being a helpful resource for students to learn more about school events and community building. This prompted the Galileo Press to find out for ourselves & ask, “How do you think homeroom affects students’ school experience & is it necessary, why or why not ? What changes if any would you make to improve it?”
“I think homeroom is necessary because students are able to get important announcements and meet new people they haven’t met otherwise. I would change the slides and how they are organized and the balance of topics. Maybe add more videos”
– Ms. Valentina | English Teacher

“One positive is that homeroom is one place to have all the announcements so everyone knows what’s going on. I don’t know that it’s fully necessary, but it can be helpful. In my homeroom, I feel that I don’t know the students at all. There’s no community building. If we spend every minute on announcements there’s no time for me to get to know them or them to get to know me.”
– Mr. Schimmel | English Teacher
“I feel like homeroom is not necessary, but I see why they would implement it to get students a chance to hear announcements and catch up with assignments. Instead of removing homeroom completely just make it shorter”
– Christian Z. | Senior

“I think homeroom affects students experiences by exposing them to more school announcements. I think it’s necessary because it even outs the class hours and gives time for work. I would stop making the slides corny.”
– March L. | Senior
“Homeroom doesn’t affect us, they just give out announcements like they do everyday before lunch. I would make it longer so I don’t have to go to fourth period.”
– Maifala T. | Junior

“I don’t think homeroom makes a huge impact but it helps with announcements. I would make homeroom longer because we need more time to catch up with work”
– Juliana M. | Junior
“I feel like homeroom is necessary because it gives the students a little bit of a break. Going class to class might overwhelm people especially if you have AP’s. I would make it longer by about 10 minutes. I feel like it’s not enough time and also make less slides.”
– Sabil K. | Sophomore

“I think homeroom is necessary because you can learn more about what’s going on in school. I think more time for homeroom would be better.”
– Dayana P. | Sophomore
“I feel like homeroom is a place where you can just chill. It’s not really necessary we just go through slides. I feel like our teacher makes us do nothing so I would maybe assign something”
– Bill T. | Freshman

“Homeroom is necessary because the information from the principal can be shown and given to the students in case they need anything such as a schedule change. Right now I wouldn’t make any changes because my homeroom is really chill.“
– Amanda S. | Freshman
