New Scheme Helps Keep Lions Close vs Eagles

Despite introducing a new offensive scheme that helped them sustain a number of drives, the Galileo varsity football team came up just short against the Washington Eagles on October 10th as a number of mistakes cost them the game, losing the game 21-14, and leading the Lions to their 3rd straight loss.

The Lions new offensive scheme, called “Cowboy”, was implemented by head coach Nicholas Naudain or “Coach Nick” in order to allow the Lions to gain positive yardage on almost every play. This scheme involves the use of additional linemen in order to have more people help block for the runner, whether it’s the running back or the quarterback.

Speaking about the new offensive scheme, Coach Nick said,”I had the play since 2016, “Cowboy” was the offensive formation that we ran at Redwood Christian [Highschool] when I was the head coach of the JV team. I’ve always wanted to install this play every year but we don’t have enough guys. but this year we do, we were just bullying people up front.”

Things looked promising for the Lions to start the game as the defense held the Eagles scoreless until the last minutes of the quarter; however, the Eagles finally broke through when they scored on a 15-yard touchdown catch, putting the Eagles in front, 7-0.

Down 7 points at half-time, the Lions came out with aggression in the third quarter and took the opening drive the length of the field and scored when sophomore quarterback (#6) Kelvaughn K. hit junior receiver (#4) Miguel Rosales for a 15 yard touchdown.  However the Eagles quickly responded with their own touchdown to put the score in the Eagles favor 14-7.

At the start of the fourth quarter the Eagles scored another quick touchdown and pushed their lead, making the score, 21-7. But the Lions responded with their own drive, scoring on a power  running play when  lineman (#60) Johnthan Kam ran it in from 5 yards away, making it only a one score game, 21-14 Eagles.

This set up the Lions last  chance to win when the Eagles botched a pitch to their running back at their own  20 yard line, However the Galileo Lions’ defense failed to recover the fumble resulting in the Washington Eagles running out the clock sealing the win for the Washington Eagles. “Unfortunately we couldn’t pick up the fumble [at the end]. I was pretty mad cause if we recovered it, I think we would have won,” said junior defensive tackle (#56) Zaveon Huffman.

Coach Nick, however, doesn’t believe the game came down to just being able to pick up the last fumble. He states, “During the game when our backs were towards the end zone we messed up the punt, with the snap being too high and our punter being tackled near the end zone. This resulted in them driving it in for a touchdown. If we get our punt off it wouldn’t have ever happened.”
